For people who are not yet familiar with GPS, the Global Positioning System is a series of sub-orbital satellites that circle the earth each with a distinctive signal. This signal is sent by the satellites to a receiver on the ground. This receiver will then tell you your exact location on the earth in longitude and latitude. The accuracy of this information is within 15 feet. Pretty amazing considering that the Earth continues to rotate while the signal is being bounced around among the satellites before being finally sent downwards.

Expensive units provide essentially the same kind of information needed to pinpoint an exact location. Among the new uses for GPS units are for some leisure fishermen who want to return home with a bountiful catch. They use these units to locate and mark a certain area in the ocean where the day before they caught a lot of fish. Once identified, this exact location can be inputted to the GPS device where the sailboat can just go directly and make the same catch again. Fish tends to congregate in one specific area so the GPS unit is very useful in this regard.

There are many ways to use GPS for finding fish. The fisherman just needs to put these coordinates and return to the same spot day after day. The exact precision afforded by GPS units are being appreciated by the fishermen in the same they used a compass in earlier times. It makes fishing more fun and productive at the same time. Knowledge of very precise locations makes fishing a sure-ball thing rather than a hit-or-miss undertaking.
